DEDICATION OF FIRST EDITION

This book is dedicated to my son Aaron. Without his considerable loving pressure to get it done, it may never have happened. It is the prayer of both of us that God will use it to advance His Kingdom. Please pray with us to that end.

DEDICATION OF SECOND EDITION

To my wonderful Christian wife Sue, who has contributed immeasurably to my life in every way, but especially to my spiritual life. Additionally she graciously contributed in no small measure to editorial work on this book. However, any and all errors that remain are entirely my own responsibility.

THE SIMPLE GOSPEL

There are many illustrations and methods for presenting the gospel. It does not matter which method we use, as long as we are following the Word of God. All variations, illustrations, or methods should contain these simple points: pastedGraphic

1. God created all things “good” in the space of six days. He judged and destroyed the world, except those on the ark, in a judgment of sin. He scattered the nations by the confusion of languages. He will come again as both Lord and judge.
Only against this Biblical history can we understand why there is evil in the world, why we owe worship and obedience to God, and how we ought therefore to live. (Genesis 1-11)

2. All have sinned. Romans 6: 23 “For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

3. The result of sin is death / separation from God.
Romans 3: 23 “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; 24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: 25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;”
Isaiah 59:1 “Behold, the LORD'S hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear: 2 But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.

We are not judged in comparison to each other, but in comparison to the perfection of God Himself.”
2 Corinthians10: 12 “For we dare not make ourselves of the number, or compare ourselves with some that commend themselves: but they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise.”

4. Therefore, there is no way we can save ourselves, no matter how hard we try.
Ephesians 2:8 “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.”

5. Jesus Christ provided the way for those who are His to have a restored relationship with God by dying for us on the cross, thereby paying for our sins.
1 Peter 3:18 “For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:”

6. He establishes an actual personal relationship with us by the work of the Holy Spirit and draws us to Himself.

John 6:37 “All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out. 38 For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me. 39 And this is the Father's will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day. 40 And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.”

7. That is the beginning of a lifelong walk with God

1 Thessalonians 3:13 “To the end he may stablish your hearts unblameable in holiness before God, even our Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all his saints.”

If the God of salvation is not the all sovereign, all powerful God of the Bible, who made the universe in six days, then we are presenting not the Biblical God but a false God. Only dealing with who God is according to scripture do we get the world view change needed to change a life.

If you do not know where you came from, it is very difficult to understand why things are the way they are and where to go from here. If you believe that that history is different than it actually is, you are bound to make false assumptions about why what is and what can be done about it. From our understanding of the past we derive our self concept, our future directions, and the solutions to problems that present themselves.

Without an understanding that the world was created in six literal days and what followed, we fail to understand who God is, the nature and result of sin, and how it is related to the evil in the world.

HOW TO PRESENT THE GOSPEL

I recommend the “Evangelism Explosion Program” or simply sharing the Simple Gospel as outlined here with the Bible verses. Some of the best presentations are spontaneous, on the back of a napkin and straight from the heart of God.

EXEGETICAL APOLOGETICS

I had already produced the first version of this book when I heard Voddie Baucham use the term exegetical apologetics. That was the first time I had heard the term. I did a quick search and found no books or articles using that term. However, I realized that was indeed a very good description of the nature of this book.

USE THE WORD OF GOD.
IT IS WHERE THE WORDS OF POWER ARE.
IT IS NOT A QUESTION OF WHETHER
OR NOT THEY BELIEVE IT.
THE QUESTION IS: DO YOU BELIEVE IT?
USE IT.
GOD WILL STAND BY WHAT GOD SAID.

VERSION CHOICE

The choice of version for witnessing should be made based on the goal, which is to clearly communicate the Word of God. Two major issues are: One - it needs to be an accurate translation; Two - it needs to be readable. The version choice needs to be made carefully. It may later be the one in which the new convert will be memorizing. It should for continuity be the one you are quoting.

Here the KJV is used so that there will be no copyright issues. Newer translations had not met the test of wide spread use in the mainstream church at the time I started memorizing basic verses. Much of my own memory work has been in KJV. I recommend the New American Standard Version or the English Standard Version or if the King’s English is not a problem for the reader, the King James Version is still a version that has for the most part stood the test of time.

WHY WITNESS

First of all we must witness because we are so commanded. We are in no uncertain terms told to witness. It is as much a part of the basic Christian life as prayer and Bible study. Our obedience is not predicated on how we feel about it, what we want, think, special talents, or spiritual gifts. We are told to do it. Not doing it is disobedience.
The second reason for witnessing is because of the joy we have to share. If we are really walking with Christ, His joy will over flow. We will not be able to avoid it. Bringing souls to Himself is what Christ does. That is why He came. If we are not witnessing, we are not walking with Him.
I enjoy the way J.B. Phillips translated Colossians 1:28 “So naturally we proclaim Christ. We warn everyone we meet and teach everyone we can all that we know about him, so that if possible we might bring every man up to his full maturity in Christ Jesus. This is what I am working at all the time with all the strength that God gives me.”

pastedGraphicTHE ICE CREAM TRUCK ILLUSTRATION

Imagine an ice cream truck broken down in a populated area. The ice cream is melting. The back up truck will not be there for hours. What is the prudent thing to do? You give away the ice cream. So it is with us. We are here. God will come back in His own timing. The information we have about the gospel will not help anybody after death. Then it will be too late. It is selfish and shameful just to let all that ice cream melt, not to mention a bad business decision, made at great public relations opportunity. Bad business choices usually are selfish. In spite of that, many seem willing to let it melt before they would share, while they sit and pout that not enough people want our ice cream.

pastedGraphic THE HOT FUDGE SUNDAE ILLUSTRATION

Can you imagine being given a huge hot fudge sundae, one of those that is so big there is no way you can possibly eat it all yourself? All around you are starving people, watching you eat it. How could you not share? Even if they weren’t starving, shouldn’t you share the joy? Not to share what was freely given to you in abundance is selfish and ungrateful.
pastedGraphic THE FIRE ILLUSTRATION

If you were walking down the street and saw a building on fire, would you tell others it was on fire? If you knew a way to safely get the people out, would you? Or would you let them burn? It may be criminal and is at least immoral to not do what you can to save them, especially if you can do it without any physical danger to yourself. In many countries today Christians are dying for sharing Christ. We in America are free to share our faith and have an obligation to do it.

MOTIVATED BY BOTH
LOVE AND TERROR

pastedGraphic LOVE

If we really experience the overwhelming love of God, how can we not share that with others? We do not deserve it. We did not earn it. It was freely given to us. How very selfish not to share it.

pastedGraphicTERRORpastedGraphic

If we really believe what the Word of God teaches about hell, the great white throne judgment of unbelievers, and the judgment seat of Christ for believers, how can we not witness? To not share that warning is the very worst form of cruelty - indifference.

WHAT TO WITNESS

Often we think that we have to know “it all” to be an effective witness. Not so. It is not amazing someone with what we know that brings people to Christ. It is often the enthusiasm with which we share what we know that draws people to Christ by His Spirit. One of the most profound witnesses in the Bible was a man who knew very little, a blind man whom Christ healed. When brought before the council to condemn Jesus, “He answered and said, whether he be a sinner or no, I know not: one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see.” (John 9:25)

pastedGraphic LAW AND TESTIMONY pastedGraphic

There are two major sources for an effective witness. One is the Word of God or the “law,” the other is the testimony or our personal story as to how we came to be a Christian and how it has affected our life. Nothing other than these two things has real power. (Isaiah 8:20)

DON’T ALWAYS ANSWER
SURFACE QUESTIONS

Much of the time Jesus did not answer the question He was asked. He answered the question behind the question, the question of the heart. Do not feel obligated to answer the question. Usually it is not even the real question. It is just a smoke screen thrown out there to simply get the spotlight of conviction off. They are feeling if they can side track you, then they don’t have to deal with the message they are hearing. That we do not always have to answer the surface question is not an excuse for us not to obey the admonition to have an answer. Sometimes people really need the question answered.

pastedGraphicTHE VALUE OF IGNORANCE

Arrogance is for fools, but ignorance is a tool. Few things are more effective than saying, “I don’t know, but I will find out. Let me set up a time with you. I will look up the answers and come back.” Then pull out a pen and set an appointment. This is very powerful. It demonstrates humility, commitment, and grows all those involved. It is also easier to get a follow up appointment when you are responding to what they asked. There is no shame in not knowing the answer to a question the first time you are asked it.

pastedGraphicTHE RESPONSIBILITY TO KNOW

We are commanded by God to grow in our faith, to learn the answers from the Word, and to proclaim Christ. It is a task assigned to us. The only question is will we obey?

IN THE LOVE AND GRACE OF THE SPIRIT

We cannot excuse ourselves from doing the right thing because some people are doing it in the wrong way. As Paul said, “What then? notwithstanding, every way, whether in pretense, or in truth, Christ is preached; and I therein do rejoice, yea, and will rejoice.” (Philippians 1:18) Some think it is their mission to put one foot on someone’s bottom jaw, reach down, pull open his mouth, and shove the Bible down his throat. When you do that you only make people choke. However, you cannot use the excuse that because some do that, we don’t have to do what God has commanded.
Often it is not so much what you do as how you do it. For whatsoever is not of faith is sin. In witnessing, as in all things, the first sign that we are walking in the Spirit in faith is that we manifest the fruit of the Spirit, one of which is love. Nowhere does it say that being judgmental is a fruit of the Spirit. We are not to beat people over the head with the Bible. We are to gently cover their hearts with the Word. Sometimes the Spirit moves with a not so gentle power, but He is always encased, surrounded, and empowered by love.

DEALING WITH QUESTIONS

A LIMITED NUMBER OF QUESTIONS
WITH VARIATIONS

There are not an unlimited number of questions. It has been said that there are only a limited number of basic plots. All story lines are an offshoot from one of those basic plots. It is the same with the basic questions encountered while witnessing. This book uncovers the root question of most of them.

THE BASIC EXCUSES, SMOKE SCREENS,
SIDE STEPS, AND
OCCASIONALLY ACTUAL QUESTIONS

Often the questions we are asked when witnessing are not really questions to which answers are actually expected or needed. Sometimes it is only a device introduced to buy the time to regroup, avoid, or confuse. For some, the goal is not to get an answer, but to stop the pain of conviction that is creeping in.
As I mentioned earlier, often Christ did not answer the question that was actually asked. He went beyond the words and answered the question behind the question. He addressed the question that was on their heart. With His guidance we can learn to do that too.

MINI WITNESS

A mini witness is something we can say or do in every day life to be what we might call an “idea bomb,” to get people thinking about things eternal. It can be a sort of pre-evangelism. These are some things we can say instead of, “Have a nice day.”

“STAY SAFE AND DON’T DIE TILL YOU’RE READY”
- Follow up -
“YOU CAN’T CONTROL WHEN YOU DIE. BUT YOU SHOULD CONTROL IF YOU’RE READY.

Question/ Comment “.... WEATHER....”
“YES, MAKES YOU WANT TO PRAISE GOD.”
Or
“YES, MAKES YOU RESPECT GOD’S WONDERS.”

“GO GOD!”
“GOD BLESS YOU!”

Instead of wearing a button supporting whatever, how about wearing a button to get people thinking about Christ. For example:

“WANT TO GO TO HEAVEN? ASK ME HOW.”

“ASK ME ABOUT JESUS”

“ASK ME ABOUT MY FAITH”

“SEEK THE TRUTH AND HE WILL FIND YOU”

“HE WHO DIES WITH THE MOST TOYS STILL DIES”

“LIFE HAS A 100% MORTALITY RATE”

”LIFE IS TERMINAL BUT IT DOES NOT HAVE TO BE FATAL”

“I’M NOT GOD - AND NEITHER ARE YOU”

“BORN ONCE YOU DIE TWICE.
BORN TWICE YOU ONLY DIE ONCE.”
pastedGraphic

THE BEST RESPONSE

The best response to those who deny the truth is simply to repeat the truth in love and let them deal with their response. God’s Word is truth. His Spirit attends it with power. ( Source from Allen - a missionary.)

A WORD ON PREDESTINATION

While it is true that God in His sovereign, just, righteous decree will bring to Himself all that He has decreed to come; His body (That would be you and I.) is the most common physical means He has chosen. Furthermore He has commanded us to warn every man to repent and believe the gospel. It is true that no man can come lest the Spirit draw him. We have no way to know whom the Holy Spirit is working with and at what point anyone will come to Christ. Some sow. Some water. Some reap. Some bring the justice and condemnation of the gospel refused.

JUDGMENT
The word clearly tells us that the spiritual man judges everything. The only exception is human hearts. The judgment of human hearts is strictly reserved by Christ.

pastedGraphicNO ELECT-O-METER
We do not know and we cannot always know with whom or at what level the Holy Spirit is working. As a pastor once told me, “We are in sales not in management.” Without knowing the who can, or will, or when, or if response, we are commanded to call all men everywhere to repent and believe the gospel.

There is no need to defend a lion in a cage. Simply open the cage door and the lion will defend himself.

PRESUPPOSITIONAL
VERSUS
EVIDENTIAL APOLOGETICS

Clearly we are to be all things to all men that we may by all means save some. It is very important that our faith be established on the presuppositional basis of Biblical authority and not the authority of man’s reason. That is the primary thing we need to learn and apply from presuppositional apologetics.

If we water down the reality of who God is according to scripture - the Creator of an all good world that man corrupted by sin - we are troubled by “problem of evil.” That issue has been answered by the Bible. That few like the answer does not change the answer.

However, there is often not much difference in the presuppositional apologist’s argument and the evidentialist argument in most situations in which we live. We need to challenge the idea that man can by himself with his own reason find God. But where the rubber meets the road, that issue seldom comes up. It is important to lay an understanding that becoming a Christian involves a shift in one’s fundamental epistemology (understanding of the basis of truth.)

THE CRITICAL IMPORTANCE OF KNOWING
WHO GOD IS ON HIS OWN TERMS

One of the biggest problems we have today is the reduction of the Bible to what man wants it to be. If God is not the God of creation, if creation is merely macroevolution, molecules to man, if you have death, disorder, and disease come before the fall - then the whole point of the Bible is lost.
The Bible very clearly teaches that death, disorder and disease are the direct result of the fall and that Christ came specifically to be victorious over sin’s resultant death, disorder, and disease. The entire message of scripture is lost if we lose the order of the events. Even children can see the whole message of the Bible is lost if dinosaurs are millions of years before man. These compromises of the Bible’s message have permeated our culture and undercut the validity of the Bible’s message in the minds of many. If we can not take the Bible seriously from the beginning, then the message is lost. From where does death, disorder and disease come? If death is not the result of sin, if it is natural, then what is the point of the resurrection of Christ?

Much of the superficiality of the church today is a direct result of substituting man’s reason and cultural perceptions for God’s Word. Christianity is an all or nothing reality. If you reduce “god” to man’s terms, you have a worthless idol, not the God of the Bible.

Basically what follows from here in this book is a pattern:

FIRST - THE BASIC QUESTION – one of the basic questions often encountered in witnessing and some of its derivatives

SECOND - A BIBLE VERSE(S) – that addresses that issue

THIRD - COMMENTS – a brief jog, the mind starter as to the scripture’s relevance to the issue.
That pattern continues though most of the book, until some closing comments at the end of the book

Q (1) BIBLE AUTHORITY (Didn’t men write the Bible? How do you know the Bible is the Word of God? Isn’t the Bible just words? Don’t all religions have a Bible? The Bible is full of contradictions.)
BIBLE
MATTHEW 5:18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.
II TIMOTHY 3:16,17 (16) All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 17 That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works
II PETER 1:20, 21 (20) Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. 21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.
REVELATION 22:18, 19 (18) For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: 19 And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.
COMMENTS
The textual and historical reliability of the Bible is not factually contestable. An examination of the scientific and historical evidence leaves no room for doubt. No one can look at the facts and not at least come to the conclusion that the Bible is, without even one close second, the most reliable document we have from the ancient near east. God’s Word can hold up to factual examination. In fact God enjoys it. To those who claim contradictions in the Bible, I just say, “Show me one.” If they show you what appears to be one, say, “That is confusing to me too. I will have to look at that closer and get back with you.” Then do that. Seek help from someone who is deep in the Word.

Q (2) JESUS AS GOD (How do you know Jesus is God? Jesus never said He was God, did He? They did not think He was God, but a rebel, didn’t they?)
BIBLE
MATTHEW 26:62-66 (62) And the high priest arose, and said unto him, Answerest thou nothing? What is it which these witness against thee? 63 But Jesus held his peace. And the high priest answered and said unto him, I adjure thee by the living God, that thou tell us whether thou be the Christ, the Son of God. 64 Jesus saith unto him, Thou hast said: nevertheless I say unto you, hereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven. 65 Then the high priest rent his clothes, saying, He hath spoken blasphemy; what further need have we of witnesses? Behold, now ye have heard his blasphemy. 66 What think ye? They answered and said, He is guilty of death.
MARK 14:61-64 (61) But he held his peace, and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked him, and said unto him, Art thou the Christ, the Son of the Blessed? 62 And Jesus said, I am: and ye shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven. 63 Then the high priest rent his clothes, and saith, What need we any further witnesses? 64 Ye have heard the blasphemy: what think ye? And they all condemned him to be guilty of death.
LUKE 22:70, 71 (70) Then said they all, Art thou then the Son of God? And he said unto them, Ye say that I am. 71 And they said, What need we any further witness? for we ourselves have heard of his own mouth.
JOHN 1:1-3 (1) In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
JOHN 5:18 Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.
JOHN 10:30-31 (30) I and my Father are one. 31 Then the Jews took up stones again to stone him.
JOHN 17:5 And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.
PHILIPPIANS 2:6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: 7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:
COLOSSIANS 2:9 For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily

COMMENTS
The authority of the word of God and the divinity of Jesus are the two biggest attacks of non-Christians. Jesus made who He is very clear. We are left to conclude that either He lied, He was nuts, or He is who He said He was - God come in the flesh. The Jews knew what He said. Several times they took up stones to stone Him for it. He was crucified for communicating He was God.

Q (3) NO GOD (How do you know there is a God? Have you ever seen God?)
BIBLE
PSALM 14:1 {To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David.} The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good
ROMANS 1:20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:
COMMENTS
Atheism is a very poor philosophical conclusion. It puts its adherents in the position of saying they know everything and God is not part of it. It is just an argument based on silence. That is an argument that says, “I don’t know it. Therefore it is not true.”

***************************************************
Q (4) CANT’ KNOW (Humans can’t know God, can they? Isn’t God outside of the kind of knowledge humans have ?)
I TIMOTHY 3:16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

The one who says he can’t know is just one step ahead of the atheist, who says he knows that there is not a God. It is still an argument based on silence. Just because he does not know does not reap the conclusion no one can know. To know if you cannot know, you must examine all facts, not your current knowledge or your “feelings” about it. You must look at all the relevant information.

Q (5) THOSE WHO NEVER HEARD (What about those who have never heard? What about other religions? What about sincere believers of other religions?)
BIBLE
ROMANS 1:20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:
REVELATION 20:15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

COMMENTS
First of all, people need to realize that if they can ask this question, it does not apply to them. You have heard and are in fact being told even now. Asking this question is not related to your responsibility to respond to what you yourself have heard.

Q (6) OTHER RELIGIONS (What about other believers who are sincere in what they believe? Aren’t many other religions even more disciplined in their religion?)
BIBLE
ROMANS 1:22-25 (22) Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, 23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things. 24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonor their own bodies between themselves: 25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.
II CORINTHIANS 11:14,15 (14) And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. 15 Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.
GALATIANS 1:8-12 (8) But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. 9 As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed. 10 For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ. 11 But I certify you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached of me is not after man. 12 For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ.
I TIMOTHY 2:5,6 (5) For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; 6 Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.
COMMENTS
If you are not a committed believer of one of these religions, this is not your issue. If you are, make sure that you are not what you are because you are accepting the things you have been taught without checking out the factual basis of your decision. If your faith’s basis does not hold up to historical, scientific, and rational examination, look again.

Q (7) ALL RELIGIONS ONE (Don’t all religions believe the same thing? Doesn’t comparative religion teach that all religions believe basically the same thing?)
BIBLE
ACTS 4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
I TIMOTHY 2:5, 6 (5) For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; 6 Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.
REVELATION 20:15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.
COMMENTS
Although truth is truth and often many people see the same basic truths, pointing out the surface similarities does not negate the deep basic differences. All religions cannot be one when the very rudimentary fundamentals are antithetical. The existence of gray does not change the reality that black is not white. There are many examples of these mutually exclusive terms and at the deepest levels. In Atheism and Buddhism there is no God. In Islam god can not be known personally. In Christianity God is personal and knowable. In Hinduism there are many gods. In Christianity there is one Trinitarian God. In all of the world religions getting the good is based on good out weighing the bad. Only in Christianity is it taught that you can never be good enough so it must be a gift from God. There are many more of these opposites that can not be true at the same time.

BIBLE
II CORINTHIANS 11:14, 15 (14) And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. 15 Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.
GALATIANS 5:19-21 (19) Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, 20 Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, 21 Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.

BIBLE
ECCLESIASTES 11: 9 Rejoice, O young man, in thy youth; and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth, and walk in the ways of thine heart, and in the sight of thine eyes: but know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment.

LUKE 12:19, 20 (19) And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry. 20 But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?

JOHN 3:18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
ROMANS 3:10-12 (10) As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: 11 There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. 12 They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.

EPHESIANS 2:8, 9 (8) For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.
I JOHN 1:8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

BIBLE
JOB 13:16 He also shall be my salvation: for an hypocrite shall not come before him.
ROMANS 14:12 So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.
COMMENTS
Just because there are a lot of wrong people does not mean that you should be one of them. You know better than to base your behavior on the behavior of others. Mothers teach that to their children. You will not be judged based on how others respond, but on how you respond to God. The average size of a church in North America is 75. The average minister has as much education as a doctor or lawyer. Their wages and benefits are set by the church leadership. Ministers normally make about the common labor wage for the area. Yes, there are exceptions, but they are truly exceptions.

Q (13) EVOLUTION (Everybody knows we descended from the apes. That is what the schools and colleges teach)
BIBLE
GENESIS 1:1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth
JOB 26:7 He stretcheth out the north over the empty place, and hangeth the earth upon nothing.
JOHN 1:1-3 (1) In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
COMMENTS
Macroevolution is a model or theory, not empirical scientific fact. It has in fact been discredited by current evidence. Were it not for the metaphysical implication of creation, macroevolution would have been abandoned in light of current abundant evidence. If this is a genuine problem to you, examine it. Empirical scientific evidence does not even support it. Look at it empirically. Science is that which is empirical. Everything else is philosophical. If I can’t go there and put it in a test tube, it is not empirical. Evolution is a theory, which most modern discoveries do not support. Believing in Macroevolution is like saying if I take a watch apart and put it in a jar and shake it enough times, it will all come back together, be wound, and tell the right time for your time zone. Actually in the case of macroevolution we do not even have the actual part of the watch, the information or DNA, to put in the jar.

Q (15) JESUS WAS A .... (Jesus was a good man ... great saint ... magician ... manifestation of god.)
BIBLE
MARK 4:60-64 (60) But he held his peace, and answered nothing. And they all condemned him to be guilty of death.”
LUKE 22:67-71 (67) Art thou the Christ? tell us. And he said unto them, If I tell you, ye will not believe: 68 And if I also ask you, ye will not answer me, nor let me go. 69 Hereafter shall the Son of man sit on the right hand of the power of God. 70 Then said they all, Art thou then the Son of God? And he said unto them, Ye say that I am. 71 And they said, What need we any further witness? for we ourselves have heard of his own mouth.
JOHN 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
COLOSSIANS 2:9 For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.
COMMENTS
We cannot draw the conclusion of who Jesus is based on other people’s opinions. It must be based on what He said about Himself. From there we are left with either He is who He said He was - God in the flesh, or nuts, or a liar, or a deceiver. These are the only options. He intentionally did not leave us any other options.

Q (16) NO MORE MIRACLES (God is dead, asleep, on vacation.)
BIBLE
I CORINTHIANS 12:8-11 (8) For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; 9 To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; 10 To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: 11 But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.
HEBREWS 2:3,4 (3) How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him; 4 God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will?
COMMENTS
This is an argument based on silence. That is an argument that says, “I don’t know it. Therefore it is not true.” Just because you may not be aware of any miracles does not mean they do not exist. There are no modern workers of miracles. The Bible clearly claims that miracles are a circumvention of natural laws that are specifically for the purpose of validating the authority of writers of scriptures. I have personally experienced miracles as answers to prayer. However, that is different than specific individuals with the power to perform miracles to validate their revelations from God. Remember the definition of a miracle is the divine circumvention of natural law.

Q (17) NO PROOF (You can’t prove it. Show me, where is God?)
BIBLE
ACTS 1:1-3 (1) The former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach, 2 Until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen: 3 To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God:
ROMANS 12:2 be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
I CORINTHIANS 15:1-8 (1) Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; 2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. 3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: 5 And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: 6 After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. 7 After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. 8 And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time.
I THESSALONIANS 5:19-21 (19) Quench not the Spirit. 20 Despise not prophesyings. 21 Prove all things; hold fast that which is good

COMMENTS
Those who use this argument have obviously not examined the facts. You only need to examine the facts to refute the argument.

Q (18) NO HELL / HEAVEN (There is no.... or any of the other things mentioned in the Bible, angels, devil, etc.)
BIBLE
LUKE 12:5 But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him.
REVELATION 20:15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire
COMMENTS
This is an argument based on silence. That is an argument that says, “I don’t know it. Therefore it is not true.” The Bible clearly states that heaven and hell are very real. Denial does not change reality any more than the belief that New York would go away if I denied its existence would affect New York.

Q (19) GOD WOULDN’T SEND A GOOD PERSON TO HELL (I’m too good for hell. I’m not a sinner.)
BIBLE
JEREMIAH 5:12-14 (12) They have belied the LORD, and said, It is not he; neither shall evil come upon us; neither shall we see sword nor famine: 13 And the prophets shall become wind, and the word is not in them: thus shall it be done unto them. 14 Wherefore thus saith the LORD God of hosts, Because ye speak this word, behold, I will make my words in thy mouth fire, and this people wood, and it shall devour them.

ROMANS 3:10-12 (10) As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: 11 There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God.12 They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.
REVELATION 20:15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire
COMMENTS
God does not compare us to each other. Only humans compare themselves to other humans. God compares us to His holiness because no one can get into heaven without being perfect. Challenge - add up the number of times a day you sin in word, thought, or deed, by commission, or omission. Multiply that by the number of days since you were born, (Current age x 365 x sins per day.) Now go before any judge with that many charges and see what he says.

Q (20) EVIL IN THE WORLD (How can a good God allow crime, floods, weather disasters, earthquakes, disease, etc.?)
BIBLE
ISAIAH 45:7 I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these things.
EZEKIEL 20:42,43 (42) And ye shall know that I am the LORD, when I shall bring you into the land of Israel, into the country for the which I lifted up mine hand to give it to your fathers. 43 And there shall ye remember your ways, and all your doings, wherein ye have been defiled; and ye shall lothe yourselves in your own sight for all your evils that ye have committed.
JAMES 4:1 From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members?
COMMENTS
Evil is there, but that reality does not negate the responsibility to respond to the message of God. God is big. If we could understand everything about Him, it would not make sense to serve Him. Confusion is not an excuse for not doing what we know is right. Genesis 1-3 clearly gives us the reason for evil and God promise to end it. In one sense evil is the absence of God’s righteousness. It was brought into this universe by the sin of man. God will in His timing putting an end to it.

Q (21) WHICH CHURCH IS RIGHT (Why so many churches? They all can’t be right. There are too many church conflicts.)
BIBLE
ACTS 2:1 And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.
I CORINTHIANS 3:3-7 (3) For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men? 4 For while one saith, I am of Paul; and another, I am of Apollos; are ye not carnal? 5 Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers by whom ye believed, even as the Lord gave to every man? 6 I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase. 7 So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase.
COMMENTS
It is not the church that sends us to heaven or hell. It is our relationship to God, not our membership in a group that determines our eternity. Of the about 250 Protestant denominations in America, almost every one of them is a member of a multi - denominational association. Yes, there are several dozen large cults, but the vast majority of churches are rooted in the historical truth of Christianity. A cult is a group that, while having departed from the historical roots of a religion, denies that it has done so. That does not mean that clear specific theology is not important. It is very important. However, the vast majority of Christian churches believes in the basics of Christian theology as found for example in the Apostle’s Creed.

Q (22) TOO MANY INTERPRETATIONS (I believe my way. You believe your way. They are all correct.)
BIBLE
ACTS 17:2 And Paul, as his manner was, went in unto them, and three sabbath days reasoned with them out of the scriptures,
ACTS 17:10, 11 (10) And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews. 11 These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.
II PETER 1:20, 21 (20) Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. 21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.
COMMENTS
The Bible was written in a language, a very precise language, with vocabulary, grammar, and syntax. Language is not arbitrary. Take the English sentence “See Dick run.” We cannot agree we are speaking English and disagree that we are to look at the noun “Dick” and that it is self motivated at some speed faster that a walk. The problem comes when we try to argue whether “Dick” is bending his knees or not, going 3.5 MPH, or 5 MPH. Is he heel toeing it, or toe heeling it? Is he a male, female, dog, or boy? Those things we are not told. Therefore we do not know. If we stick with the vocabulary, grammar, and syntax, there are not many interpretations. The few places that might be confusing are all taught not once, but in several different places for comparison. Some things God has clearly told us basically I am not going to tell you.

Q (23) I’VE HEARD - DONE - IT BEFORE (Tried once had a bad experience ... hurt feelings ... didn’t work.)
BIBLE
JOHN 3:36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.
HEBREWS 7:25 Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.
JAMES 1:22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.
COMMENTS
This is not related to an examination of the facts. Do not make decisions about what is true based on good or bad experience, but on the facts. Truth is based on factual reality. It is not based on an opinion, or how we may feel about it, or on how others respond to it.

Q (24) I DON’T BELIEVE IT (Not true for me. Not my mind set. Not my worldview.)
BIBLE
ROMANS 3:3 For what if some did not believe? shall their unbelief make the faith of God without effect?
HEBREWS 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
COMMENTS
If I don’t believe in the reality of gravity or the existence of the city of New York, that has no impact on the reality of their existence. It is not our choice to believe or not believe that defines reality. Reality is totally independent of my decision whether or not to believe it. I assure you; you will not stand before God at the judgment and make it go away because you choose not to believe it.

I CORINTHIANS 15:33 Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners.

God does not compare us to each other. He compares us to Himself. If we are not perfect, we will not get to heaven. Perfection, through the forgiveness supplied by Christ’s sinless life and payment for our sin on the cross, is available to all that are His, or we pay for our own sins.

JOHN 13:7 Jesus answered and said unto him, What I do thou knowest not now; but thou shalt know hereafter.
ACTS 1:7 And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power.
I CORINTHIANS 13:11 When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things. 12 For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am know.

MATTHEW 24:23-27 (23) Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not. 24 For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. 25 Behold, I have told you before. 26 Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Behold, he is in the desert; go not forth: behold, he is in the secret chambers; believe it not. 27 For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.
II PETER 3:3-9 (3) Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, 4 And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation. 5 For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water: 6 Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished: 7 But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men. 8 But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. 9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
COMMENTS
This is an argument based on silence, which says, “It is not something I know. Therefore it is not true.” Just because He has not yet returned does not mean He will not.
How is truth impacted by my impatience? It is not.

Q (32) DON’T NEED CHURCH (Don’t need the people. Don’t need the politics of church. I can worship in nature.)
BIBLE
MATTHEW 18:20 For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.
HEBREWS 10:24, 25 (24) And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: 25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.
COMMENTS
Church is not a building or an organization. It is an interrelationship with other believers. The Bible says if we have a relationship with Jesus, we need and will want to be with other believers. If you are not in a relationship with Jesus, the issue of church is not your issue. Once you are related to Jesus, the issue of church will not be a problem. You will want it and sense your need of it. Don’t get it backwards.

Q (33) RAISED A CHRISTIAN (My relative --- was a preacher. Always been a Christian. My mother / father ... was a Christian)
BIBLE
JOHN 1:12, 13 (12) But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name. 13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
JOHN 3:5, 6 (5) Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
COMMENTS
There are no second generation Christians. Being a Christian is a function of your relationship to Jesus, not a function of your relationship to anyone else.
***************************************************
Q (34) NOT SIX DAY CREATION (What about big bang, old earth, evolution, carbon 14?)
BIBLE
EXODUS 21:11 For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.
EXODUS 31:17 It is a sign between me and the children of Israel for ever: for in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested, and was refreshed.
COMMENTS
If you eliminated all the direct accounts of creation itself in the Bible, you would still have to conclude a six day creation based only on references to the Sabbath in relation to creation. However, this is not the issue here. The issue is: are you going to heaven? If you really have a problem with the science that is in the Bible, look at the fact of what science is. If it is not empirical, it is not science. If you cannot test it in a lab, it is not science. It is philosophy. Macroevolution is a theory that most modern discoveries do not support. The paleontological evidence is dated based on the assumption that macroevolution is true. This skewed evidence is then used as a “proof.” This is circular reasoning. Dating systems are based on an eternal uniformitarianism hypothesis. This presupposition assumes without any evidence that creation did not happen. Creationism more accurately matches the actual facts.

Q (35) NO RESURRECTION (I don’t see Him. They stole the body.)
BIBLE
I CORINTHIANS 15:3-8 (3) For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: 5 And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: 6 After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. 7 After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. 8 And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time.
I CORINTHIANS 15:14-20 (14) And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain. 15 Yea, and we are found false witnesses of God; because we have testified of God that he raised up Christ: whom he raised not up, if so be that the dead rise not. 16 For if the dead rise not, then is not Christ raised: 17 And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins. 18 Then they also which are fallen asleep in Christ are perished. 19 If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable. 20 But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the first fruits of them that slept.
COMMENTS
It is difficult to historically deny the resurrection when we see that every one of the apostles (except Judas and John) were martyred for preaching it. The resurrection was the primary reason for the persecution of the church. Jesus was crucified because He said He was God. The resurrection proved it. You cannot explain the response of the early church without it. But most importantly, I know the resurrection is true because of my own personal relationship to Jesus.

Q (36) NOT HOW I FEEL (I was taught, was raised.)
BIBLE
ROMANS 1:20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:
ROMANS 3:3 For what if some did not believe? shall their unbelief make the faith of God without effect?
I CORINTHIANS 15:3-9 (3) For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: 5 And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: 6 After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. 7 After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. 8 And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time. 9 For I am the least of the apostles, that am not meet to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God.
II TIMOTHY 3:16, 17 (16) All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.
II PETER 1:20, 21 (20) Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. 21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.
COMMENTS
Fact has nothing to do with how I feel about the fact. Many people, when they talk about religion, hide in feeling. No one effectively does that to resolve any other problem in life. We must base our belief about eternity on the evidence and facts, not our subjective feelings. Faith is not how I feel. It is the next step I take after the facts. The leap of faith is not a blind leap. It is the next logical step after having followed the facts to their conclusion. I have faith the sun will come up tomorrow because of history and basic knowledge. The only fact is that the sun came up yesterday and today. Tomorrow and the belief that right now is, is a matter of faith.

Q (37) I’M TOO SINFUL (I’m too bad. I’ve done too much wrong.)
BIBLE
ISAIAH 1:18 Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.
I TIMOTHY 1:15, 16 (15) This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief. 16 Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting.
COMMENTS
You can’t be the most sinful person. Paul claimed that place. God does not compare us to each other. He compares us to Himself. We are all equally sinful. One sin is not greater than any other. He forgives all of His people for all of their sins through the sinless life of Christ and the finished work of Christ on the cross.

Q (38) JESUS IS NOT THE MESSIAH (His own people did not believe Him, so why should I? The Jews still do not believe He was the Messiah.)
BIBLE
ISAIAH 53:3-6 (3) He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. 4 Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. 5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. 6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.

Q (39) I BELIEVE IN REINCARNATION (Many religions feel we are reincarnated.)
II CORINTHIANS 5:8, 9 (8) We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord. 9 Wherefore we labour, that, whether present or absent, we may be accepted of him.
HEBREWS 9:27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:
COMMENTS
There is no second chance. When we die, we face eternity and judgment, not a return. Be assured you will not stand before God and say, “Gee, I would like to go back now.”

***************************************************
Q (40) I WORSHIP NATURE. (All things are God. God is in nature isn’t He?)
GENESIS 1:1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
JOHN 1:1-14 (1) In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men. 5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. 6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7 The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe. 8 He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. 9 That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. 11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not. 12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: 13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. 14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
ROMANS 1:22-25 (22) Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, 23 And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things. 24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves: 25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.
COMMENTS
God made all things. He is the maker of them, not the things themselves. To worship nature is to reduce God from the creator of all things to simply a part of what He Himself has made. Be assured He does not reduce Himself to that what He has made. He remains transcendent to and Lord of, not part of, His own creation.

CHRISTIAN EXCUSES FOR NOT WITNESSING AND ENCOURAGEMENT TO WITNESS.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
***************************************************
Q (1) WHY WITNESS - TERROR
BIBLE
JOB 31:23 For destruction from God was a terror to me, and by reason of his highness I could not endure.
II CORINTHIANS 5:11 Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are made manifest unto God; and I trust also are made manifest in your consciences.
COMMENTS
The question about witnessing is not really do others believe it, but do we. How could anyone actually believe in a real hell and then not care if those we love and those we meet go there?

***************************************************
Q (2) WHY WITNESS - LOVE
BIBLE
ROMANS 5:3-5 (3) And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; 4 And patience, experience; and experience, hope: 5 And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.
II CORINTHIANS 5:14,15 (14) For the love of Christ constraineth us; because we thus judge, that if one died for all, then were all dead: 15 And that he died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose again.

COMMENTS
If we have experienced personally the love of God, it automatically must bubble over to others. If we are not bubbling over, we are not filled with the Spirit of God.

***************************************************
Q (3) NOT ALL ARE COMMANDED TO WITNESS
BIBLE
MATTHEW 5:15,16 (15) Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.
JOHN 17:18 As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world.
JOHN 20:21 Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you.
ROMANS 10:9-11 (9) That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. 11 For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.

We are too. Nuff said.

Q (4) JUDGMENT OF BELIEVERS
BIBLE
ROMANS 14:10 But why dost thou judge thy brother? or why dost thou set at nought thy brother? for we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ.
I CORINTHIANS 3:11-17 (11) For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12 Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble; 13 Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is. 14 If any man's work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. 15 If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire. 16 Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? 17 If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.
COMMENTS
Going to heaven is a free gift based on the life and substitutionary death on the cross of Jesus as our Savior, even the faith to receive it is a gift from God. Believers will be judged regarding our behavior, not for salvation, but for rewards which we then lay at Christ’s feet since He enables them. It will have an impact on our eternity, though not our salvation. Anyone who does not experience some fear of the judgment seat of Christ must not have a grip on who Jesus is and who they are.

Q (5) COMMANDED TO HAVE AN ANSWER
BIBLE
COLOSSIANS 4:3-6 (3) Withal praying also for us, that God would open unto us a door of utterance, to speak the mystery of Christ, for which I am also in bonds: 4 That I may make it manifest, as I ought to speak. 5 Walk in wisdom toward them that are without, redeeming the time. 6 Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.
I PETER 3:15 But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:

BIBLE
ISAIAH 8:20 To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.

JOHN 9:25 He answered and said, Whether he be a sinner or no, I know not: one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see. Answer to a question the FIRST time we are asked it. After that it is our responsibility to find out so know and can tell others.

BIBLE
EXODUS 4:10-12 (10) And Moses said unto the LORD, O my Lord, I am not eloquent, neither heretofore, nor since thou hast spoken unto thy servant: but I am slow of speech, and of a slow tongue. 11 And the LORD said unto him, Who hath made man's mouth? or who maketh the dumb, or deaf, or the seeing, or the blind? have not I the LORD? 12 Now therefore go, and I will be with thy mouth, and teach thee what thou shalt say.
ISAIAH 8:20 To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.
MARK 13:11 But when they shall lead you, and deliver you up, take no thought beforehand what ye shall speak, neither do ye premeditate: but whatsoever shall be given you in that hour, that speak ye: for it is not ye that speak, but the Holy Ghost.

ROMANS 10:9, 10 (9) That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. 10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

JOHN 20:21 Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you.
ACTS 1:8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
I CORINTHIANS 15:58 Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.

LUKE 6:26 Woe unto you, when all men shall speak well of you! for so did their fathers to the false prophets.
II CORINTHIANS 4: 8-12 (8) We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; 9 Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed; 10 Always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body. 11 For we which live are alway delivered unto death for Jesus' sake, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our mortal flesh. 12 So then death worketh in us, but life in you.

I RECOMMEND MEMORIZING THE VERSES TO PRESENT THE GOSPEL AND FOR BASIC DISCIPLESHIP AND THEN MEMORIZE THESE.

VERSES FOR MEMORIZING

There are many helpful systems for scripture memory. Which one you use is not nearly as important as that you use one and work hard at scripture memory. I have found NO single discipline as helpful. One idea is to write the verses out on 3x5 cards and keep them in a 3x5 card box in Biblical order to review and work on during your daily devotions and Bible study. I have found it very helpful to cut the cards a little smaller than a business card and keep them in a business card holder in my pocket to learn and review throughout the day. Whatever method you choose to use choose one and do it!
Psalm 119:11 “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.”

BASIC VERSES FOR PRESENTING THE GOSPEL

THE SIMPLE GOSPEL

There are many illustrations and methods for presenting the gospel. It does not matter which method we use, as long as we are following the Word of God. All variations, illustrations, or methods should contain these simple points:

1. God created all things good in the space of six days.

2. Genesis 1-11 (At least memorize the outline)

3. All have sinned.
Romans 6: 23

4. The result of sin is death / separation from God.
Romans 3: 23
Isaiah 59:1
2 Corinthians10:12

5. Therefore, there is no way we can save ourselves, no matter how hard we try.

Ephesians 2:8-10
Note that even the faith is a gift from God.

6. Jesus Christ provided the way for those who are His to have a restored relationship with God by dying for us on the cross, thereby paying for our sins.
1 Peter 3:18

6. He establishes an actual personal relationship with us by the work of the Holy Spirit and draws us to Himself.
John 6:37-40

7. That is the beginning of a lifelong walk with Gods
1 Thessalonians 3:13

The model of effective prayer is commonly called the Lord’s Prayer. It is actually the prayer of the Lord in response to the request, “Teach us to pray.” So it is His prayer lesson to us. Luke 11:1

The key to real prayer is confession and worship. You can visualize them as the fingers on a hand.

Matthew 10:32 Whosoever therefore shall confess me before men, him will I confess also before my Father which is in heaven. 33 But whosoever shall deny me before men, him will I also deny before my Father which is in heaven. 34 Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.

Luke 12:8 Also I say unto you, Whosoever shall confess me before men, him shall the Son of man also confess before the angels of God: 9 But he that denieth me before men shall be denied before the angels of God.

WITH YOUR LIFE

Luke 8:62 And Jesus said unto him, No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.

Galatians 2:20 I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.

Galatians 6:7 Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. 8 For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting. 9 And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. 10 As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.

OBEDIENCE TO THE END
If you love God you will want to obey God.

John 14:15 “If ye love me, keep my commandments.
16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;
17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. 18 I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. 19 Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also.
20 At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you. 21 He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.
John 15:8 Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples. 9 As the Father hath loved me, so have I loved you: continue ye in my love. 10 If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love. 11 These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.”

HOW TO CHOOSE A CHURCH
The church is the bride of Christ so think of a the key elements of a church by the acronym W.I.F.E.

W. – WORSHIP does the word of God direct the worship?
I. – INDEPTH Is the Bible taught in depth not
superficially with exegetically based sermons that are
expository covering the Word of God cover to cover
verse by verse?

F. - FELLOWSHIP does regular discipleship Christian
training and discipline take place?
E. – EVANGELISTIC is the church adding members who
are converts to Christ not merely transfers from other
churches?

A FEW SUGGESTIONS ON
HOW TO GIVE
AN EVANGELISTIC TESTIMONY

1. First it must say, “Yes” to the question, “If this was the only opportunity the listener had to hear about Jesus, would the gospel be communicated clearly enough for the listener to know how to become a Christian?”

2. Divide it into thirds, one-third on before you were a Christian, one-third on how to become a Christian, one- third on what God has done in your life since you became a Christian.

3. Have four versions: a 10 second, 60 second, three minute, 20 minute. Also have some quickie “idea bombs” to get people thinking as the Spirit leads.

At All Levels of Maturity
I strongly recommend that –

1. You read through the Bible each and every year

2. Have daily devotions

3. Go to a Biblical Church, one that preaches through the Bible verse by verse and actually believes it is the very Word of God

4. Regularly study the Bible beyond simple devotions

5. Most importantly take a continued commitment of continued growth; NEVER be satisfied with where you are with God.

1 Thessalonians 4:1 “Furthermore then we beseech you, brethren, and exhort you by the Lord Jesus, that as ye have received of us how ye ought to walk and to please God, so ye would abound more and more.”

I John 2:12 “I write unto you, little children, because your sins are forgiven you for his name's sake.
13 I write unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I write unto you, young men, because ye have overcome the wicked one. I write unto you, little children, because ye have known the Father.
14 I have written unto you, fathers, because ye have known him that is from the beginning. I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abideth in you, and ye have overcome the wicked one.”

Hebrews 5:11 Of whom we have many things to say, and hard to be uttered, seeing ye are dull of hearing.
12 For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat.
13 For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe. 14 But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil. 6:1 Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God,
2 Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.

THE CAPTIVITY OF THE WESTERN CHURCH
TO SECULAR CULTURE.

When I was young, evangelicalism had a strong vibrant Biblical center. Today that is not equally so. Much of the American church has compromised to its demise on:

Philosophy of Science

Science, even empirical science, does not offer absolute proof of anything. The conclusions of scientists are often as subjective as the conclusions of philosophers. The best most accurate definition of science is: the best guess, of a specific person, at a specific time, using specific data, interpreted by a specific bias, using flawed reason and logic, regarding incomplete information.

Trust No One

Having said that do not assume I have any thing less than great respect for the scientific method. However, we can only really respect that which we understand. Understanding means knowing both its value and its limitations. If we down play either of those qualities or do not appreciate them. We do not actually know that which we claim to respect. That is why we always take everything back to the touch stone of the scripture. Always put your trust not in men but in God’s Word. In that sense trust no one. However, that does not mean that we do not need to be obedient to God and have fellowship and worship with each other.

I Corinthians 11:14 “And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light.
15 Therefore
it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.”
Galatians 1:7 “… but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ.
8 But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.
9 As we said before, so say I now again, If any
man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.”

Creationism VS Macroevolution

Without the God of salvation being the God of the Bible, who literally created the world in six solar days, all good, the rest of the Bible makes no sense. If death, disorder, and disease come before the fall, then the whole purpose of the gospel is lost. All of the many, many verses that presume and draw fundamental doctrines from Genesis 1-11 must be called into question if it is not real history.
You can’t have it both ways. You can not disregard the historical reality of Genesis 1-11 and then say all of those doctrine based in the historical accuracy of Genesis 1-11 are true such as: the first and second Adam, the presences of evil because of the sin in the garden, the basis of marriage because of Adam and Eve, the need for a death on the cross because of the sin of the garden, the resurrection because death entered the previously all good world because of Adam’s sin.
It has been said and it is basically true that the whole Bible is in many ways a commentary on Genesis 1-11. That lays the foundation for Christian morality and redemption. One may divide the Bible up into basically three sections. First you have Genesis 1-3 where we have an all good world and then the fall. Second you have Genesis 12 through Revelation 20 where you have the historical love story of God’s judgment of sin and redemption of the elect. Lastly you have Revelation 21-22 which is a brief introduction to the glory of eternity with God and the terrible eternity of the judgment of the nonelected.
The first 11 chapters of Genesis lay the foundation for the reason for the last two chapters of Revelation. All of the chapters in-between tell of how a righteous and holy all good God brings a fallen humanity to a just and righteous judgment and redemption. Take out the historical accuracy of any portion of it and the coherency of the entire Bible makes no sense.

Biblical Inerrancy

Although it is good, healthy, and wise to know, teach, and understand the evidential reasons for believing that the Bible is indeed the very Word of God, it is important to note that throughout history man’s interpretation of history and man’s perspectives on science have changed and continue to change. Currently the in vogue position of society in general is that the Bible in not historically reliable, while at the same time the objective evidence for the reliability of the Bible is solid and abundant. However, as man’s perspective changes, God’s does not.

Our ultimate belief in the authority of scripture
is the self validating nature of scripture.

One - it says that it is the very Word of God. II Timothy 3:16 All scripture
is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
17 That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.

Two - if you apply it to life it works - . John 7:17 “If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or
whether I speak of myself.” Rational reasons to believe are good and helpful. But ultimately the final validity for the reliability of scripture rests in God’s revelation of Himself in His Word and in His creation.

Affirming inerrancy means that the Bible as we have it today preserved in the Greek and Hebrew texts available is such that its historical reliability is uncontestable. Its meaning is nowhere contradictory when looked at with the careful eye enlightened by the Holy Spirit using the grammar, syntax, and vocabulary. Although some things in scripture are, as Peter tells us, hard to understand, they are no where hard to understand due to the reliability of the words but rather because they sometimes dealt with things beyond the comprehension of human reason. Using human authors with different styles, personalities, and perspectives God, through the Holy Spirit, gave us the very words He wanted to give us. It is accurate, true, and reliable.

Subtle distinctions are made to undercut the authority of scripture. It is very important to not only affirm what you believe, but to clarify what you do not believe.

Affirming the inerrancy of scripture does not mean that there are no textual issues to resolve. Affirming inerrancy does not mean that it was dictated to the human writers in such a way that no elements of human style or perspective were involved.

The scripture does not ONLY contain the word of God – obviously if the Bible is inerrant, it contains the word of God. However this phrase is taken to mean that the "bible" itself is not in its entirety God’s word, but merely that God’s Word is in there some where in some part and it is man’s reason and task to decide what the parts are that actually are God’s word. Man is, therefore, enabled to twist and contort the actual words to mean what man chooses them to mean and apply them when convenient.

The scripture is not ONLY the authority in faith and practice – obviously if the Bible is inerrant then it is the authority in faith and practice. However, this phrase is taken to mean that the "bible" is only authoritative in matters of faith and practice. Therefore in areas that do not involve faith and practice, it is not actually God’s word. So again man is left to decide which parts deal with faith and practice and which parts are merely myth and stories. Man is, therefore, enabled to twist and contort the actual words to mean what man chooses them to mean and apply them when convenient.

The scripture is not ONLY without error in its original – obviously if the Bible is inerrant it is without error in its original. However, this phrase is taken to mean that because only the original is without error, and we do not have the original, man must determine which parts are reliable and which parts are not based on his own reason. Man is, therefore, enabled to twist and contort the actual words to mean what man chooses them to mean and apply them when convenient.

The scripture is not ONLY substantially free of error – obviously if the bible is inerrant it is substantially free of error. However, this phrase is taken to mean that although there is not much error in it, it does contain some error. Man must, therefore, determine which parts are in error and which parts are not. If we do not accept the sovereign providence of God in preserving the text man assumes he can to twist and contort the actual words to mean what man chooses them to mean and apply then when convenient.

The scripture is not true in every word it says though
everything in the Bible is “The Truth
” – obviously if the Bible is inerrant it is “The Truth;” however, equally obvious, is that when the Bible quotes a liar, such as the devil in Genesis, the liar is lying. That is, the Bible accurately records the liar’s lie. When the Bible gives the philosophy of man, such as Ecclesiastes10:19 “19 A feast is made for laughter, and wine maketh merry: but money answereth all things.” it truthfully records the philosophy of man. However, when the context is examined, we see “The Truth” that the philosophy of man is a lie that has been accurately recorded. Therefore we are not free to contort the meaning of scripture to our own ends, by examining portions of it to suit our own ends, but we must rather compare scripture with scripture and see the internal synthesis of the Bible as a whole. The context of the passage and the context of that passage in relationship to the entire Bible must be examined.

The Five Solas of the Reformation

Sola means “only” in Latin
Only Scripture
Only Faith
Only Christ
Only Grace
Only for God’s Glory

Man’s Reason verses God Revelation

The significant thing that happened in the “enlightenment,” which I refer to as the “endarkenment,” is that man’s understanding was darkened. Although there have always been, since the time of the fall, those who start with the reason of man instead of the word of God, that is at its root what happened in the fall. It was not in western culture until the “endarkenment;” from Descartes’ “I think therefore I am.” declaration that man has now elevated himself to: “Man is the measure of all things.” Whenever man’s feeble, finite, and sin generated reason raises its ugly head above God’s Holy Word, things go amuk. History does not repeat itself directly. However, indirectly man does consistently screw up the same way over and over and over…

Biblical Basis of Morality

You do not have to be a great scholar or a prophet. It only takes a rudimentary student of history to know that if America does not return to her foundations she will fall. There is no basis for a morality internally. That is, man left to himself comes up with his own convoluted and variegated justifications for a morality or for the lack thereof. If there is to be any universally enforceable morality, it must be external. That is, it must be God’s moral standards, not man’s.

Religion VS. Theology
The critical difference between religion and theology. Religion is the duty of human behavior as it relates to one’s world view. It involves the study of the organization of practices, rites, presuppositions of human as they act upon their world views. It basically starts and ends with man and man’s perspectives. Theology is different. Theology is the study of God it starts and ends with God.

It is critical that we understand the theological limits of man and the ssufficiency of God in theology. It is important to understand some of the primary divides within Christianity. Yet we must remember although these differences are important and of huge consequence the real issue is not one train of thought or one human perspective over the other. The only point that really matter is what is God’s perspective. That is what the truth is. The only thing we can know fro certain about God is that which He Himself has revealed. The full extent of that is found in nature from which we can know His eternal power and Godhead and His Word from which we can know everything else that He wants us to know about theology.

Calvinism v Arminianism

TULIP WEEDS
T. - Total Depravity W. - Weakened
U. - Unconditional Election E. - Everyone Chooses
L. - Limited Atonement E. - Everyone’s Sins Paid
I. - Irresistible Grace D. - Decision by Man
P. - Perseverance of the Saints S - Security Eternal

Although not many churches today are Calvinistic, that is the primary theological position that came out of the reformation. Arminianism was declared to be a heresy at the Synod of Dort which convened in the city of Dordrecht,
after 180 sessions with representatives from all over Europe who were some of the greatest theological minds in history.
Although I am not saying you must be a Calvinist to be a Christian, it does represent the core of the doctrine that came out of the reformation and was the primary position of the majority of America’s founders. It was taught in all the major colleges of America well into the 1800’s. Elenctic Theology by Francis Turretin was the text book used for theology in America.

Memorizing of a catechism, usually the Westminster Shorter Catechism, was required by law for all children and all adults were responsible to test them on it. This was mandated in the first education law in America - Massachusetts Act of 1642.

IF YOU ARE NOT A CALVINIST…

You can still use this book. The verses and the questions are the same regardless of your theology. I do suggest you study BOTH sides of the argument. You are not in a position to make a decision on any issue in life unless you thoroughly understand both sides.

The most succinct statement of how to do good Bible study is the first chapter of the Westminster Confession of Faith.

Three clear rules of Bible study are:

pastedGraphic The GOLDEN rule of Biblical interpretation is:
When the plain sense of scripture makes common
sense, seek no other sense.
[The exegesis not eisegesis rule –
take it all out, put nothing in]

pastedGraphic The PLATINUM rule of Biblical interpretation is:
If your interpretation of any one verse of scripture
disagrees with your interpretation of any other
verse, at least one of your interpretations is wrong.
[The no paradox rule –
reasonable and logical, no contradictions]

pastedGraphic The DIAMOND rule of Biblical interpretation is:
You are not in a position to interpret what the Bible
says on any issue until you know what the Bible
says in every verse that touches on any part of
that issue.
[The synthesis rule - get it all together rule]

Synthesis of Scripture

One book
The five solas - Only Scripture, Faith, Christ, Grace, for God’s Glory are the guide.

Both the OT and the NT are equally the Word of God
There is a reason that the majority of the Bible is OT – it is important and necessary to understand the whole Word of God
All things point to Christ
All Grace
One Message
Every verse is needed to fully understand every verse

The
SYNTHESIS OF SCRIPTURE
comparing and interpreting every verse of scripture against every single verse of scripture is the single most important issue in having a theology that is truly based on what the Bible actually says on any given issue!

About the Author
I was born in Flint, Michigan, raised in that factory town during the turbulent sixties. My parents worked third shift. I basically never saw much of them. My family had some special challenges. I didn't have any religious upbringing. By the time I graduated high school, I was a verbal, defiant atheist. Later in the Michigan woods, largely due to the influence of a couple of wonderful Christian families and a friend, I became a Christian in a quiet prayer to Jesus next to a log.
I was drunk for my high school graduation. I graduated with a 1.7 on a 4 point scale. My counselor basically told me I was too dumb to go to college. After I became a Christian, I graduated seven more times, with two certificates, AA, AAS, BS, MS, MA, and Ed.S. My IQ score jumped over 50 points. Go God! I have a quarter of a century of formal education and the one thing I know for sure is that all of us together know nothing unless we first know Jesus.
